Learning through languages

The benefits of learning another language are well-established. As pointed out by the Victorian Government*, these benefits include brain development, cognitive flexibility, enhanced problem-solving and general literacy skills.

"One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”

Frank Smith, psycholinguist

The Bayswater South Primary School community is proud of the school’s history of more than 40 years of English and German bilingual education, within our modern and contemporary Australian primary school setting.

Where possible, the school welcomes German traditions to supplement the immersion experience. Foundation students receive a specially made Schultüte on their first day lovingly made by their Year 5 buddy. Our classrooms include German picture story books, traditional and German pop songs and for older students, conversations around football, Eurovision, food and cooking, and current events, (such as elections in Germany), are discussed to provide a rich context for understanding the language and the lives of people who speak German. Year 5 and 6 students regularly visit a local German aged-care facility and can converse naturally and enthusiastically in German with the residents.
